As winter sets in, Palapye community will be treated to a half marathon to promote healthy living.

The marathon, which is on its second year, will be held on June 9 and the start anf finishing point will be at with Majestic Five Hotel.

Palapye Half Marathon organiser, Moagi Rahube said he was expecting a high number of participants this year adding that the organisers were doing their best to publicise the activity.

Last year, he said the turnout was impressive; having attracted 300 athletes mostly from Palapye and surrounding areas.

“Last year, we held an injury free marathon and managed to register the 21km second runner up with an athletics club in Palapye,” he said. The marathon will be carried out in various categories, 21km, 10km, and four km fun run, registered at P100, P90 and P50 respectively.

The marathon will be the first of its kind with a newly introduced 10km walk race registered at P50. The walk race involves pumping arms vigorously as the athlete increases speed hence the movement helps tone the muscles in the arm, neck and neck.

It also burns the calories and helps improve aerobic fitness level with a low risk of sports injuries. Rahube confirmed that the walk race had so far received high registration numbers.

The winners of the 21km race will walk away with P4 000 for both males and females, while their runner ups in positions two and three will walk away with P2 000 and P1 500 respectively.

In the 10km race, the winner will walk home with P2 000, while position two and three will get P1 500 and P1 000 respectively for both males and females.

Those who scoop positions one, two and three in the walk race will walk away with trophies. Rahube said the elderly people aged 65 and above would be registered freely in order to encourage healthy lifestyles amongst the elderly people. Ends
