Scores of primary school students from Serowe-Palapye region descended on Mmualefhe Primary School, Serowe, with ambitions of securing a spot at the broadcasting summit in Bobonong slated for May 24-26 under the auspices of Destiny Shapers.
In securing the penultimate spot at the broadcasting summit, winning students will garner an ultimate spot at African Broadcasting Summit in December. Sponsored by The Broadcasters Oraganisation, a total of 17 students from the seven schools from Palapye Sub -region and four from Serowe Sub -region will book themselves tickets to the broadcasting summit nationals in the capital of Bobirwa region.
Only students who come out tops from quiz, debate and on-air news reading amongst other 11 activities of the day will book themselves spots at the nationals where eventual winners will gain a ticket to gauge their talents amongst other African pupils.
Held under the theme: Broadcasting as an agent of transferrable skills and knowledge in the 21st century, speakers at the event outlined the need for students to hone their skills in preparation for the education and training sector strategic plan where students will choose the path that suits their performance and talents.
Regional Operations director - Central Mr Sonny Mooketsi said that the theme spoke to government mission of producing a learner of the 21st century as advocated for in ETSSP through multiple pathways.
He found that the activities will accord students opportunities to express themselves and thereby moulding an assertive individual. He also found that the 21st century skills would increase the learners’ marketability, employment and readiness for citizenship.
The director assured TBO of support and nurturing of the relationship that resulted from both Ministry of Basic Education and TBO harboring common interest of improving students’ academic performance.
TBO’s director Mr Layani Elias said the project had delivered positive results to some primary schools already; a move he said was a source of gratification to TBO and its begotten party Destiny Shapers.
“The theme aligns well with assimilating technology into the classroom as an effective way to connect with students of all learning elegances,” said Mr Elias who added that broadcasting encompassed learner’s awareness and understanding of the past and the present.
Mr Elias cited programmes such as Talk Back on Botswana Television as having contributed significantly towards advancing teachers’ knowledge and skills on collaborative methods through the use of distance education and information communication technology.
He appealed to teachers to work together with all stakeholders towards production of good grades. BOPA
