It must have been a tough one for the judges to decide winners of the contemporary music and DJ finals during the President’s Day competitions  at Tsholofelo Park on July 15.

The contemporary music and DJ competition was divided into four categories: best upcoming artist, best backtrack artist, best live artist and a new category of best DJ.

Nonetheless, sparks flew in the backtrack category where renowned Skavenja of Gaborone was pitted against the likes of Barney Mino from Mmashoro, Snex and Wonder Musica from Maun and Dedcoh Machine and Desert Musica from Kang.

Dedcoh, Skavenja and Snex who are regulars in the competitions, battled it out again last year in the same category of best backtrack.

Despite tough competition among the artistes, Dedcoh was the one who seemed to have impressed the judges most, hence emerged victorious in the best backtrack category while Barney came second.

Competition was also tough in the best upcoming artist category made up of A re gopoleng Gospel, Kelly Jess Sisters, Jomo Makhanga and Thari Ya Setso who were the winners in the category. Best live artist was another category which the judges seemed to have had a difficult task as the artistes displayed an outstanding performance.

The category comprised of an award winner and internationally known folklore artist, Ntirelang Berman, new group Mazganda.com from Francistown, Thokefra et Leon de Afrique from Ghanzi and Dawg Rose and Jah Wariours from Maun.

The winner in the category was rhumba music group Thokefra et Leon de Afrique, followed by Mazganda.com.

Then came time for the much anticipated best DJ category where eight DJs in the likes of Kebz, Slim, Max, Young Mula, Mitcheal, Bunz, Fondo Fire and Jakes had to show and use their skills and creativity behind the decks.

At the end, DJ Slim from Francistown emerged the master of all masters in the DJ category while DJ Young Mula of Gaborone came second best . ENDS
