25 Feb 2018

Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Eric Molale says Cabinet community service days have continued to impact positively on the lives of people.

Giving an overview at the Cabinet community service day at Thapong Visual Arts Centre on February 23, Mr Molale said the days had, among others, helped to improve the living environment of many people through different activities often embarked upon such as cleaning, painting and tree planting.

He added that as Cabinet, there were products to have achieved the objective of the community service days, which he said was to give back to the community.

Commending President Lieutenant General Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama for the initiative, Mr Molale noted that the President would, during his retirement, look back with pride at what had been achieved through community service days.

The minister, who indicated that Cabinet community service day at Thapong was the 34th, expressed optimism that the culture of holding community service days would continue even after the assumption of the presidency by Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi.

Briefing those in attendance, board member of Thapong Visual Arts Centre, Mr Mesh Moeti said the centre provided working space for artists, and also helped them sell their artworks.

He expressed gratitude that some of the artworks in government offices had been bought from Thapong artists.

Mr Moeti also hailed government for having afforded Thapong Visual Arts Centre the place to operate.

He said though the pre-independence structure that was in the plot when it was handed over to them was dilapidated, support from government had been encouraging as the centre was given funding totaling P2.2 million, which they used to construct additional buildings.

He stated that they intended to roll-out their services to places outside of Gaborone.

He thus appealed to government to help the centre achieve the dream.

Activities of the day included, among others, painting of murals and marking of parking spaces.

The murals painted depicted some key sectors of the economy such as education, culture, sports and agriculture.

President Khama, Vice President Masisi, Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials took part in the activities of the day.ENDS
