Mayor calls for action in execution of projects

22 Feb 2018

The mayor of Selebi Phikwe, Mr Molosiwa Molosiwa has called on more effort to be exerted in the execution of all plans and programmes in place geared towards the revitalisation of Selebi Phikwe economy.

Such initiatives are Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) and the Constituency Community Development Projects (CCDP) among others.

Speaking at the official opening of Selibe Phikwe Town Council (SPTC) meeting on Tuesday, Mr Molosiwa called on officials mandated to oversee the implementation of programmes and projects to tighten up their belts.

He said the council would implement five ESP Phase 2 projects with their respective electrical works funded at the tune of over P19 million in the current financial year.

He explained that the projects include one double classroom block and a toilet block at Botshabelo Primary School, one double classroom block and two toilet blocks at Phikwe Primary School as well as one double classroom and one toilet block at Tlhabologo Primary School.

He further added that the project to construct 12 teachers quarters was in progress.

Mr Molosiwa also noted that for the next financial year, SPTC had not yet been funded for the backlog eradication, which was executed through ESP.

Instead, he said the town had been funded to undertake maintenance of teachers’ houses. He said the project was estimated to cost P6.5 million.

He went on to acknowledge the introduction of CCDP, explaining that with the tight budget the town council faced, it was difficult to finance all development projects earmarked for the area.

Therefore, he said the introduction of CCDP had eased SPTC financial situation to pursue some of the projects.

He noted that few projects were awarded under the CCDP and 70 per cent of the projects had commenced and contractors were on site.

He further sad SPTC was in the process of addressing potholes along some roads in the town that came as a result of the recent torrential rains.

Currently, he said the council was undertaking maintenance of 44km of unpaved roads in the town including the clearing or grading of primary school playgrounds.

So far, 41km of road has been covered while five school playgrounds have been completed.

The mayor further indicated that projects under the Department of Tribal Administration, which included maintenance of three customary courts namely Ikageleng, Kagiso and Botshabelo were in progress.

He said Ikageleng Customary Court was complete while Kagiso and Botshabelo courts were 80 per cent complete.

He also indicated that routine inspection of streetlights metering units was carried out on a weekly basis.

He said the operation was going well and most faults identified were rectified by Botswana Power Corporation in conjunction with SPTC electrical division.

Meanwhile, no motions or questions were presented for debate during the full council meeting.

The meeting only included presentations from Botho University, University of Botswana and other parastatal organisations. Ends
