Toilets modification matter urgent - councillor Leshomo
22 Feb 2018
Nominated councillor, Ms Tshenolo Leshomo has called for action to modify pit latrines in the 36 primary schools in Molepolole Administrative Authority, as a matter of urgency to cater for reception classes to avoid incidents that were likely to occur.
Speaking during the ongoing Molepolole/Lentsweletau Sub- district Council meeting recently, Ms Leshomo said the situation in schools required immediate action to avoid unfortunate situations that the council could have avoided.
She condemned the introduction of pre-schools before proper arrangements could have been made, noting that business operations were required to meet the standard.
“Let us ensure uniformity in operating public institutions than to make emphasis only on those operating privately when the council continues to put children’s lives at stake,” councillor Leshomo advised.
Ntlolengwae councillor, Mr Solomon Ramalejane decried the current status of the Molepolole Sports Complex, arguing that the facility was in a dilapidated state and had long been operating without running water.
“It is disheartening that the facility was put in place for a particular purpose, mainly to host various sporting codes, among others premier league games, but people were always required to bowse water everytime the facility was required for use,” he said. He challenged the department responsible to see to it that there were significant refurbishment of the facility to serve the purpose it was intended for, arguing that its current status was appalling.
Among issues raised by councillors was that of Mankgwenyane councillor, Mr Molemisi Motsewabathata, who complained about the increasing crime situation in Molepolole, saying the situation required the intervention of the village leadership, especially bogosi.
“It is important that the voice of dikgosi is heard as the supreme authority in devising means on how social ills in the village, especially issues affecting youth such as school-going children could be addressed,” councillor Motsewabathata emphasised.
He raised concern about the price escalation of materials supplied to council projects when there was evidence that similar materials could be purchased at a lower price for projects of the same status.
He challenged the management to guard against such by intensifying monitoring mechanisms.
Councillor Allen Jacobs reported the increasing student’s delinquent behaviour among Moruakgomo Junior Secondary School students, with regular fights reported.
Meanwhile, nominated councillor, Mr Motlhophi Leo reiterated his concern over action against the piggery project operating from a residential plot in the village, producing the stench that posed a health hazard to the community.
The situation, he said, has been prevailing for over 10 years without action with reports regularly made to relevant authorities in vain.
Councillor Leo also advised Kweneng District councillors to be aware of the fact that they were also players in the development processes, and that they had to ensure regular monitoring of projects in their respective areas than to blame staff.
Councillor Borumolano Mathwai called on the government to consider not to compel farmers to use the broadcasting planting method, arguing that row planting was not convenient since there were no reliable farming implements and that rainfall was also unreliable.
On the issue of the piggery project, Molepolole Administrative Authority senior assistant council secretary, Mr Gofaone Kgabanyane gave an assurance that action would be taken since they were empowered by the council’s recent revised Bye-Law Act, which he said, would help them deal with the matter accordingly.
