Botswana will host CUCSA games in June and 10 Southern Africa countries are expected to compete.
Letsebe said in an interview that they were prepared to host the games and the unveiling of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) was one of the major indicators of their readiness given that the LOC was made up of experts from different field who would be running the show as well as ensuring that everything went well.
“In terms of facilities of play, we have partnered with the University of Botswana and they have offered their facilities ranging from the UB stadium, softball pitch, basketball, netball and lawn tennis courts. They have even offered their new Campus Indoor Sports Centre Facility which will host the official opening of the games and the opening netball game and UB will be used as the athlete’s village,” Letsebe stated.
Letsebe also indicated that various facilities around Gaborone, amongst them Lekidi Ground, Ditshupo Hall, National Stadium, BUAN and Botho University grounds would be used.
He explained that all the countries had confirmed their attendance for the games and they would be attending the CUCSA Annual General Meeting to be hosted this Friday.
“We have already started selections for teams. This past weekend we completed softball selections and we have already had a rugby tournament in preparation for the games and around March we have bracket championships where the bulk of selections of various codes will take place,” Letsebe said.
Letsebe indicated that the games would also be used to spread positive message on various issues affecting the youth such as drugs and alcohol abuse.
UB director of Culture Sports and Recreation, Raj Rathedi said the university was ready to play its part in hosting the games.
“Just recently, our campus was the athlete’s village for the Botswana Games and for the region 5 under 20 games so we are more than ready for CUCSA. Our security personnel will also form part of the LOC to provide the needed security and all our facilities are available and fully functional,” said Rathedi. Ends
