Recent times are technological eras where the basic knowhow of information technology is key, hence Water Utilities Corporation saw it fit to provide Gudigwa Primary School with IT equipment.
Gudigwa Primary School in Okavango District received seven new computers, a laptop and a printer under WUC’ corporate social responsibility programme, which seeks to give back to the community.
Speaking at the handover ceremony recently, WUC chief executive officer, Mr Mmetla Masire said since the dawn of the 21st century, technology had crept its way into learning and teaching environments.
“As more technological advancements are made, then there is dire need for increased literacy levels on the use of this technology, IT being one of them, and to achieve this we have to start with the young minds, the primary education,” he said.
Mr Masire also noted that information technology in education had improved communication, adding that there were some remote areas in the country where communication and learning was a problem, but due to IT, tutors could lecture learners over long distances and scholars could achieve their academic papers through eLearning.
He therefore said as a corporation, they were compelled to accede to Gudigwa Primary School’s request for IT equipment donation.
On another issue, Mr Masire encouraged the school management and staff to soldier on and to ensure that children were moulded into educated and responsible citizens.
For his part, deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Basic Education, Mr Simon Coles encouraged teachers to allow full utilisation of the computers by pupils, adding that the computers must be used instead of being left to collect dust.
He said children should be allowed to research and do a lot with these computers for improved education.
Furthermore, Mr Coles said as the responsible ministry, they would help with internet connectivity at the school for maximum utilisation of the equipment.
District officer, Okavango District, Mr Tshepo Mogojwe also said technology had become part of modern life, therefore donation of IT equipment to the school was timely.
He said it would be ideal for government to introduce computer studies at primary schools. Ends
