District governor of Lions Club, Lion Mr Jona Machaya says Lions Club empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs.
Mr Machaya, who hails from Zimbabwe, was speaking at the 50th anniversary celebrations of Lions Club in Lobatse on Saturday (February 10).
He noted that Lions Club started in Lobatse 50 years back while Lions Clubs International was the world’s largest service club organisation.
He said its 1.4 million members were dedicated to bettering the quality of life for the handicapped, the poor, the sick and the aged.
He noted that the motto of Lions Clubs International is ‘We Serve,” and that Lions live the motto with enthusiasm.
He said their mission was “we’re a well-run organisation with a steady vision, a clear mission, and a long and proud history.”
He said the International Association of Lions Clubs began as a dream of Chicago insurance man, Mr Melvin Jones, who wondered why local business clubs did not participate in volunteerism.
Throughout the world, Lions are recognised by the emblem they wear on their lapels. It consists of a gold ‘L’ on a circular purple field.
The international association supports the efforts of Lions clubs and partners in serving communities locally and globally.
Lions Club members in Lobatse promised to work together to assist the less privileged in Lobatse and the surrounding areas.
They said they were doing a lot in Lobatse even though there were challenges before them.
They thanked Lobatse Town Council for the healthy working relationships, noting that there were a lot of projects which took place in Lobatse. ENDS
