Budget constraints hamper road development

04 Feb 2018

Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Kitso Mokaila has informed Ntlo Ya Dikgosi that the Sekoma/Mahotshwane, Jwaneng/Maokane, Jwaneng/Lorolwane, Trans-Kalahari Junction/Kokong, Jwaneng/Mokhomma/Samane/Thankane and Mabule to

Lerolwane roads were not included in NDP 11 nor ESP due to budgetary constraints.

Responding to a question in Ntlo Ya Dikgosi, Mr Mokaila said his ministry would continue to maintain the roads by dry grading, adding that the roads were budgeted for outsourcing in the current financial year except the dry grading of the Mabule to Sekhutlane road which was done by an in-house team.

He noted that the Jwaneng\Sese and Phitshane Molopo to Mabule section which has already been tarred from the Phitshane Molopo side were included under the Output & Performance Based Road Contract (OPRC) projects which include upgrading to bitumen.

Kgosi Kekailwe Tefiso of Ngwaketse West region had asked the minister to state when the above roads would be tarred.

Responding to another question from Specially Elected Kgosi Isaac Titus, Mr Mokaila said the prosopis bush or Sexanana was a problem along most of the roads in Kgalagadi South, including Bokspits, Struizendam and the Transfrontier road. Mr Mokaila said the Roads Department was currently undertaking bush clearing along the Tsabong-Bokspits road and that when funds permit, the Bokspits to Struizendam-Transfrontier road would be considered for bush clearing in the 2018/19 financial year.

Kgosi Titus had asked if he would consider clearing prosopis along the Bokspits-Struizendam-Transfrontier Park roads as it was becoming hazardous to road users. ENDS
