Government consoles families of deceased

Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Ms Kebonye Moepeng, has on behalf of the President, on January 30 visited families of the five people who perished in a car accident along the Gumare/Sehithwa road.
In her meeting with the deceased’s family members, Ms Moepeng said she was sent by Lt. Gen Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama to check on how the families were coping and also the preparations for funerals to see how best government could assist.
She said such an incident was a national catastrophe because the five met their demise while on their way to take part in a government initiative, constituency tournament.
Ms Moepeng therefore said government, through the Okavango district commissioners’ office, would make necessary arrangements to see to it that the affected families get aid in this gray times.
Nonetheless, the families highly appreciated the support they got from the government, noting that a visit by senior government officials sent by the President soothed during such somber moods.
The district commissioner’s office has so far provided tents and firewood for all the affected families.
Five footballers died while seven others sustained serious injuries along the Gumare/Sehithwa road on Friday after the Ford Ranger they were travelling in was involved in an accident.
It is suspected that the driver lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road, rolled several times, leaving five passengers dead on the spot.
Four of the deceased are from Gumare while one is from Etsha 6 in the Okavango District. Ends
