President Lieutenant General Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama has appreciated the warm reception accorded to him by Batawana during his visit to bid them farewell at the main kgotla.
He was overwhelmed by the attendance, the venue setup which was decorated in Botswana colours, the unique presents, sweet melodies, beautiful speeches, poems and mostly the parading of horses which escorted him as he entered the kgotla.
“Indeed this is something special and I will never forget what you have done for me,” he said when giving his farewell message. President Khama said Batawana had showcased their unique and rich culture which they had maintained for years.
The colourful ceremony was conducted in a traditional way and it was indeed up to the moment. The musical genius, Monageng aka “Stika Sola” Molefhi added spice to the glamorous event.
Batawana demonstrated love towards President Khama as they showered him with many presents ranging from baskets (65), traditional boat (mokoro), traditional chairs, a hat, a gun, walking sticks, clay pots, cycling computer, a fridge, a 1000 liter water bowser, 30 cattle, 20 goats, three sheep, 16 chicken, a donkey and P39 000.
President Khama welcomed the presents and stated that indeed they were very special singling out the traditional canoe and a donkey. He shared with the audience that he used a traditional canoe thrice at areas of Kasane, Jao Flats and Shakawe.
In addition, he said the canoe needed someone who was used to as it did not balance and at times, it could embarrass the poler by capsising. He also noted that the boat was also easily attacked by hippos.
With regard to the donkey present, he said he had never ridden a donkey noting that it was not rider friendly unlike a horse but assured Batawana that he would see what to do with the two unique presents.
In her welcome remarks, Batawana regent Kealetile Moremi said Batawana were happy to bid the President farewell in a stylish way to appreciate the foundation he had laid in their district.
She said President Khama had made a positive impact in the entire nation and stressed that it was worthwhile to appreciate his good deeds.
In addition, she said the President served the country wholeheartedly, vigorously and with respect hence the need to recognise his contributions.
She also appreciated the President efforts in promoting conservation, sports and arts development, culture preservation and empowering the youth through introduction of various interventions. Kgosi Moremi said President Khama also worked well with Bogosi during his tenure.
Youth representative, Mr Thato Molosi thanked the President for coming up with programmes aimed at fighting unemployment amongst young people adding that “we are very proud of you as your programmes helped many of us to realise our potentials and explore our talents to earn a living”. Ends
