Speeding motorists pain Kumakwane

24 Jan 2018

Residents of Kumakwane in the Kweneng District have concurred with their area Member of Parliament, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo that something needed to be done to end speeding along A10 road by motorists passing through the village.

The residents, during a kgotla meeting by Mr Mabeo, decried high volumes of accidents, which have resulted in many deaths of the village inhabitants, citing among others, primary school pupils.

They lamented that motorists seemed not to be heeding calls to reduce speed when passing through their village.

As such, any intervention to force motorists to slow down would be welcomed, while others said there was a need for prayer to seek God’s intervention.

For his part, Mr Mabeo agreed that there had to be an intervention to bring to an end the longtime residents’ outcry.

He said he was already studying a report from the Thamaga Police Station about the road accidents and what could be done to address them.

Mr Mabeo also said he was awaiting another report from the Department of Road Transport Safety, which would also contain recommendations.

He promised that such reports would empower him to argue his case going forward.

He regretted that speeding motorists killed residents of Kumakwane and Thamaga, and residents have lived with that pain for long.

Mr Mabeo, who is also the Minister of Employment Labour Productivity and Skills Development said the police had tried to remedy the situation by mounting speed traps, but that had not curbed the problem, adding that he supports the introduction of speed humps.

The area MP also regretted that the constituency development fund projects had not been implemented.

He said he was hopeful that the projects that were lagging behind would be completed before the end of the financial year as the Kweneng District Council had promised.

Further, he urged the council to be proactive in delivering community projects, adding that village development committees always decried delays caused by council officials.

Kgosi Chomie Seboni of Kumakwane had earlier briefed the MP that government often came up with good projects and initiatives, but authorities were always slow to implement.

As such, the community failed to benefit from the intended projects and he cited the constituency development fund projects, which he said had not yet started in the village. Ends
