11 Dec 2017
Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) has donated a house to the Motlogelwa family in Palapye through the Presidential Housing Appeal.
The house was constructed by BPC though the corporation’s corporate social responsibility and additional funds were sourced from the BPC Morupule A trainees who raised over P12 000 towards the project.
Handing over the house recently, BPC chief executive officer, Dr Stefan Schwarzfischer commended those who played a part in the project, saying they had changed someone’s life for the better by providing them with shelter.
He said the house would give the family dignity, urging the children to take their studies seriously so that they could contribute towards the development of the country.
Dr Schwazfischer also applauded those who extended their hand towards the success of the project which had cost over P100 000, particularly BPC Morupule A trainees and Maitlamo SACCOS who offered to wire the house and pay the electricity connection.
The CEO also promised that BPC would continue giving the family social support and ensure that the house remained in a good state.
He said if an opportunity arised, BPC would train one of the children in electricity as a form of empowerment.
The children were brought up by their aunt and are aged between five and 23.
Receiving the house, senior private secretary to the President, Brigadier George Tlhalerwa thanked BPC for their support towards the Presidential Housing Appeal initiative. He said the initiative by President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama had restored dignity to the less privileged members of society.
He said the next coming president would continue with the initiative.
Brigadier Tlhalerwa said so far 797 houses had been handed over through the housing appeal initiative of which 13 were for Palapye Administrative Authority.
He said shelter created a conducive environment, adding that it brought about a healthy mind and healthy body. He commended the Palapye Administrative leadership for nominating the right candidate to benefit from the initiative.
He also thanked community development officers for assisting the beneficiary. Brigadier Tlhalerwa also applauded the media for promoting and publicising the initiative, saying the programme had a wider scope of coverage which contributed to its growth.
For his part, Palapye Administrative Authority chairperson, Mr Lesedi Phuthego said it was the council’s responsibility to provide and care for the under privileged by building 10 houses in the whole district annually. He appreciated efforts made by companies, individuals, corporations and government departments who continued to show their commitment and support for the programme. He thanked BPC for the house and urged the Motlogelwa family to take care of it. Ms Itumeleng Motlogelwa thanked BPC for the donation and also thanked government for coming up with the Presidential Housing Appeal initiative, saying it would go a long way in helping Batswana. ENDS
