Bagwasi eyes dream title challenge
07 Dec 2017
When Steven Bagwasi trots into the ring at Grand Palm Hotel Casino this afternoon against his Namibian opponent Rafael Lita for a six rounds international lightweight boxing match, he won’t shrug of the prospects of winning the fight and eventually setting up what could be a dream World Boxing Association (WBA) Pan African title fight.
First, he has to beat Lita in a mouth-watering international contest billed to take place before the much anticipated 12 rounds WBA Pan African Featherweight title between the two undisputed champions Fhadili Majiha of Tanzania and Rofhiwa Maemu of South Africa today.
Majiha is a WBA Pan African Super bantamweight champion while his nemesis is draped with a WBA Featherweight belt.
Speaking a day before the weigh-in of the Fox Sports boxing bonanza the hard hitting Bagwasi was buoyed by the fact that his opponent was not a closed book as he had previously seen him fight and studied his movements around the ring.
Lita’s last fight in Botswana was a match against local boxer Mmoloki Thipe where he won by a technical knockout.
Bagwasi enters the ring with an impressive record in the paying ranks having won his debut professional match against South African Brandon Bocking and his second match was not physically demanding as he had a walk over Lobatse-based Kagiso Tebogo.
Another mouth-watering clash will be between the two promising local boxers, Kutlwano Ogaketse and Onkarabile Mothibedi in a four rounds super-featherweight bout.
Mothibedi from the Melroy Boxing stable comes to the match with an impressive record of two wins and no lose and will face a mammoth task against the stocky Ogaketse who will be looking for his third straight win.
Mothibedi will have to rely on his immaculate hand speed and excellent hand-eye coordination to overcome his opponent who is undoubtedly on fire.
In an international lightweight contest Moabi Ngaka will come face-to-face with South African Sibusiso Hlongwane.
In another four rounds contest Tshephang Babui will face-off South African Nyiko Ndukula. An international bantamweight bout will feature Kenyan Gabriel Ochieng and Sikho Nqothole before the final match. Ends
