Morupisi commends Debswana for safety environment

04 Dec 2017

Permanent Secretary to the President, Mr Carter Morupisi says it is pleasing that Debswana’s safety performance continues to be equal to world class standards as a result for the various safety, health and environmental programmes in place company-wide.

Speaking at this year’s annual Debswana Corporate Centre Long Service awards, Mr Morupisi, who is also the chairperson of Debswana Board of Directors, said it was incredible that through the programmes, the company’s total recordable injury frequency rate currently stood at 0.17 against a target of 0.25 and a stretch target of 0.20.

“This to me is a world class performance and deserves a round of applause,” he added.

He explained that with safety, people always have to be on the guard and could never become complacent.
“We do have areas of improvement that I know the management team is aggressively pursuing through safety culture improvement initiatives,” he said.

He therefore encouraged employees of Debswana to embrace the renewed safety improvement effort to achieve their goal and gain the path to greatness.

Mr Morupisi, who is also the head of the public service, said the board was delighted at the bold targets that Debswana set itself to support Botswana’s commitments to global sustainability goals, which include lowering water and energy footprint.

“In addition, planning now for eventual mine closure, seeking means of increasing the local legacy impact from your operations and supporting the communities within your operations’ zones of influence through impactful corporate social investment projects is of paramount importance to the equation,” he added.

He said the overall health of the business was also vibrant and has been since 2014, despite the market challenges that the company and the country encountered in 2015 and successfully mitigated.

“We have, as the board of directors, previously acknowledged this effort and tonight, I want to reiterate it. Well done and keep making us proud,” he said.

To the recipients of the long service awards, Mr Morupisi inspired them to continue with their purpose to turn diamonds dreams into lasting reality, particularly for the precious generations to come, all of whom face a radically challenging world.

He said it was crucial for Batswana to bestow generation to come a legacy that shall serve as their point of moral and honourable reference.

Mr Morupisi also took the opportunity to encourage everyone to know their HIV/AIDS status and enroll for the 90-90-90 programme introduced by government early this year, in pursuit of defeating the HIV/AIDS scourge by 2020.

He said there were many programmes that government continued to provide for its employees that include Anti-Retro Viral therapy, which Debswana was the first in the world to provide for its employees.

There were 69 employees who were awarded the long service awards with 28 of them having five years of their active work lives to Debswana, 23 served for ten years, ten served for 15 years, three for 20 years while four contributed 25 years individually.

Debswana managing director, Mr Balisi Bonyongo was one of the recipient of the long service awards with a tenure of 30 years in the company. ENDS
