Molao links university to knowledge based economy

The Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology Mr Fidelis Molao says Botho University’s development has been closely linked to Botswana’s transition and his Ministry’s mission of transforming Botswana to knowledge based economy.

Speaking at the University’s 20 years celebration recently in Francistown Mr Molao said the university thus placed a strong focus on excellence, leadership and innovation.

He commended the university on emphasising on quality, technology, staff development and stakeholder engagement noting that they were crucial for Botho’s future growth and development.

He further noted that in the quest for quality Botho University had undertaken to become an ISO 90001:2008 certified organisation since 2013 and had maintained its certification status. 

It also subjected itself to the African Quality Rating mechanism which was an initiative under the Association of African Universities in order to be able to benchmark itself with other universities on the continent.

Mr Molao added that Botswana needed institutions similar to Botho University for her to fully meet the human capital needs of the economy.

He noted Botho University had chosen to offer programmes in niche areas like engineering to meet the diversification of the economy.

The Assistant Minister also said the university’s mission in creating employable graduates, it had embarked on ensuring that the graduates also became entrepreneurial.

He moreover congratulated the University for providing great opportunities for students and continually striving for high educational standards.

Earlier in his welcome remarks the Botho university former Advisory council chairperson, Mr Tembo Lebang applauded the university on the journey it took for two decades.

He noted that the university did not only focus on education but had embarked at several activities aiming at making a significant contribution to the community, adding that the activities included donations of computers in selected primary schools, business skill development and training for teachers on computers.
