Boteti sub-council removes illegal sign boards
30 Nov 2017
The Boteti sub-council chairperson, Mr Molemi Galeragwe says in an endeavour to collect revenues for council, all illegal sign boards have been removed in the sub-district.
He told the sub council meeting held in Letlhakane recently that the council was charged with the responsibility to regulate on advertisement and hoarding signs within its area of jurisdiction.
That he said was done through issuance of planning permits with an annual levy paid to the council but despite this there had been proliferation of erection of illegal signboards.
Mr Galeragwe said advertisement signs were a source of revenue for council which he said was not fully collected as expected.
In an effort to address this perpetual act the Central District Council he said had previously made efforts to alert the owners of such boards to remove them failure of which it shall remove at the owners’ cost but to no avail.
That he said was done by engagement through meetings, issuance of notices in the newspapers with the last notice ending on November 8, 2017.
Mr Galeragwe informed the sub-council session that Boteti had been nominated to implement the Local Economic Development (LED) programme.
LED is one of the government initiatives that had been identified to address developmental challenges such as unemployment, poverty and reduction of dependency on single economic sector.
He said it was a process by which public, business and non-governmental sector work collectively to create better conditions for economic growth and employment generation.
Boteti Sub-district he said had gone ahead and done LED awareness workshops in Boteti Sub-district. The latest training was conducted on November 9, for councillors.
He said the council through the Technical Task Team was yet to conduct the Local Economic Analysis which would inform the Local Economic Development strategy.
Mr Galeragwe pleaded with council members to join hands and make LED initiative a success citing that for Boteti to grow it was imperative that business opportunities that exist in the Sub-district were unlocked. The sub- district he said was blessed with resource endowments that could be harnessed for local economic development. ENDS
