Minister urges farmers to diversify

29 Nov 2017

Cluster farmers in Good Hope sub-district have been advised to come up with diversification methods.

Speaking at a Local Economic Development (LED) stakeholders workshop recently, Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Dr Alfred Madigele said it was imperative for farmers in the district to not only target Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board, but rather come up with other ways such as formation of cooperatives to expand their market.

He said the district was fortunate to be among those chosen for the LED trial process.

Dr Madidele said he believed other districts would learn from them. “For a country to develop it starts from villages,” he said.

He also advised them to expand their horizons and share with the locals and other stakeholders about what they had learnt.

When briefing the participants about the objective of the workshop, Good Hope sub-district, senior assistant council secretary, Mr Robert Rabasimane said the workshop was to familiarise them with LED and how to work together and map the way forward for economic growth in the sub-district.

He also said it was imperative for the stakeholders to know their contribution as they were aware of the economic conditions in the area and also recognise their needs to improve lives of the communities.

He said it was up to them to come up with ideas of how they could alleviate poverty and create sustainable jobs.

Good Hope sub district chairperson, Ms Maobene Molefe said the workshop was a good platform for them to start THE new year.

She appreciated the development in the area, saying the workshop would equip them on ways to eradicate poverty. BOPA
