Intensify project management - Official

28 Nov 2017

Boteti Sub- district Technical Committee and District Economic Development Committee have been urged to intensify project management to improve timely delivery of projects.

District officer for development, Ms Nobuhle Mbusi said there was generally a slight improvement in the sub-district especially on project implementation due to close monitoring and supervision.

She was giving a report during Boteti Sub-district council meeting recently.

All these improvements, she said had happened despite delays or slow progress by some contractors, shortage of manpower such as brick layers, shortage of sand and water.

Contractors that did not adhere to the contract, she said were notified about the implications of project delays such as being blacklisted among other things.

She said the sub-district would implement 267 projects during 2017/18 financial year including a spill over from the previous financial year 2016/17.

Already, she said 88 out of 228 projects, which were started were 100 per cent complete while 131 projects were ongoing and on schedule and within budget and 39 were yet to be awarded while nine were behind schedule.
Further, she revealed that 328 projects were funded since the inception of Youth Development Fund in the district.

She explained that 133 of those projects were in Boteti East constituency while 195 were in Boteti West constituency.

The projects, she said were funded at the tune of over P30 million. Boteti East projects were funded at over P12 million while those in Boteti West were funded  at the tune of over P17million.
Ms Mbusi said 263 projects were operational, 30 had collapsed while 34 projects were still at procurement stage and one had relocated.

Furthermore, she added that 17 projects were monitored in the second quarter as compared to 12 projects in the previous quarter.

“Construction of 106 kilometres Makgadikgadi/Nxai National Park non-lethal electric game proof fence in Khumaga through Economic Stimulus Programme was at 44 per cent on average but at halt,” she said.

She stated that there was no further development regarding construction of the fence, since the contractor had failed to meet the deadline and was awaiting authority for extension of time.

Ms Mbusi noted that from 3 293 beneficiaries mobilised and assessed for poverty eradication programme, 825 qualified for funding, of which 783 were fully funded and 71 partially funded.

She said 640 projects were operational, 105 non-operational and 41 had failed with 35 of them being successful.

Out of 152 backlog projects,  she said the sub-district had managed to fully fund 99 projects and seven were partially packaged while the rest were waiting funding.

Ms Mbusi said the sub-district leadership would continue to intensify counselling of clients and their families on the importance of projects through joint kgotla meetings and site visits. Meawnhile, the district leadership had urged departments to desist from operating in silos and share resources such as  transport. BOPA
