Education requires tripartite approach - NDB chief
27 Nov 2017
National Development Bank chief executive officer, Ms Lorato Morapedi says a tripartite collaboration of parents, teachers and students with all playing their part fully is fruitful for education.
Speaking at Adelaide Primary School 20th anniversary celebration on November 25, Ms Morapedi challenged all players to assume their rightful positions to deliver quality education.
She emphasised that, ‘the truth is that education starts at home, where morals and values are first inculcated in children.”
Exalted as one of the citizens who have impacted positively to the development of business in the country, Ms Morapedi warned parents against over-protecting their children and showing disapproval of teachers’ ways in front of their children.
She argued that students who were assured of parental protection against teachers who demand the best from their students tend to relax and consequently deliver a poor academic yield.
She observed that some parents generally prioritised social engagements ahead of their children’s education, hence availing every opportunity for waywardness.
Whilst extoling teachers as agents of change and socialisation, the NDB CEO appealed to teachers to be exemplary, arguing that the ‘do as I say not as I do’ doctrine did not work with children since they were good observers and learners of behaviour and actions.
Ms Morapedi called on the students to gear up to be extraordinary.
To achieve the feat, she urged students be open minded and inquisitive, emphasising on listening as a special skill in the process of learning.
On other related issues, the NDB chief warned parents and teachers against violence perpetrated on women and children as a reminder to the 16 days of activism against violence on women and children.
She called on parents to take a stand not to be counted among those that have destroyed the lives of children.
She found that young drug mules who peddle drugs usually point back to adults when nabbed.
She also noted that absent parenting contributed to children being attracted to negative energy since they lacked guidance. ENDS
