Landfill poses health hazard
27 Nov 2017
Pilane landfill continues to be an eyesore to the public and poses a health hazard especially for A1 Road users, Pilane and Rasesa residents who inhale strong odour from burnt waste materials.
Kgatleng District Council’s Department of Environmental Health official said they were aware of the situation at the landfill, which had passed its lifespan adding that its expansion was being carried out to cater for more waste.
In an interview, chief public health officer, Mr Levy Chezuva said the council was aware of sporadic fires at the landfill.
He said fires were usually caused by people who bring burnt materials at the landfill.
Mr Chezuva said last time the landfill was up in smoke, the Fire Department tried to put it out, but it never died out.
He said the fire started again after a while.
Going forward, he said the council would ensure that they had different places to be used for disposing of waste.
“Therefore, the categorisation of waste will help us solve the issues of fire, which we believe will never happen again when we start the new operation,” he explained.
He said the council had taken a decision to expand the landfill by another five years and hope that this would help address lack of space for waste on the landfill.
Mr Chezuva said the tendering process was at an advanced stage and clearing of the area and construction would commence soon.
He pleaded with the public to bear with them as they would do everything possible to address the matter. BOPA
