08 Jul 2013

The President Lt Gen Seretse Khama Ian Khama donated 200 blankets, 200 shirts and 71 coats to elders of Matapana ward in Maun on July 11.

The President, who was in Maun for the Botswana Democratic Party’s (BDP) National Congress, also interacted with village elders at the kgotla and shared a meal with them.

He was accompanied by some cabinet ministers to the event which was also graced by the Acting Paramount Chief of Batawana, Kgosi Kealetile Moremi.

President Khama noted that it was his first visit to Matapana ward kgotla and assured elders he would be coming back soon to spend time with them.

The President also said his interactions with ordinary Batswana would continue as it gave him an opportunity to listen to their suggestions on what Batswana needed from government.

“The reason why I give out blankets and coats is that I do not want elders feel cold,” said President Khama.

For his part, Maun East Member of Parliament, Mr Frank Ramsden said it was not every day that people got to interact with the head of state noting that President Khama was the first in Africa to do such.

“When he started with his interactions with Batswana at the kgotla and his walk abouts, some people said it was all about votes even though all he wants is to help Batswana,” he said.

Kgosi Bontsi Bokae of Matapana ward said he was happy that President Khama took time out of his party activities to spend time with the elders in his kgotla.

Kgosi Bokae informed the President about water shortage in Maun and pleaded for assistance.
