Residents of New Disana ward have been warned to stop illegal dumping as it makes the area unattractive.
Kgosi Tatlhego Ropheya warned residents during ward victory celebration after the ward emerged this year's champions in cleanliness competition held in Maun recently beating other 22 wards.
Last year, the ward also won P1 000 and a certificate.
Despite efforts by environmental health officials to distribute free dustbins and spread messages aimed at promoing clean environment, he said it was frustrating as some residents continue to throw litter on ungazetted areas.
Therefore, he urged residents to know the importance of keeping their environment clean saying those caught on the wrong side of the law, would be panalised.
Outlining the objective of the campaign, principal environmental health officer, Mr Daniel Olerilwe informed residents that clean environment prevents diseases, brings dignity and cultivates national pride
He said the district was prone to malaria; hence he emphasised the need to always keep the environment tidy.
In addition, he said it would not only prevent disease and enhance quality of life but also attract foreign investors and tourists.
Mr Olerilwe applauded the ward for a sterling job and encouraged them to maintain the standard.
He stated that government had set aside over P13 million annually to conduct environmental health activities.
Also, he informed residents about the new initiative dubbed ‘Buy litter’, which was piloted at Matlapana ward.
Acting chief public health officer, Ms Bosiela Segogo explained that the competitions were held annually and aimed at encouraging communities to take responsibility in keeping the environment clean.
She also complained about illegal littering noting that some people dump litter inthe outskirts of Maun.
Thus, she called on communities to take advantage of the available initiatives aimed to promote clean environment.
The communities were also advised to cooperate with the Green Scorpion officers and law enforcement agencies.
Ms Segogo also informed residents that the ministry had come up with another initiative where communities would be expected to clean the environment on a monthly basis.
Initially, she said clean up campaigns and inspections were conducted between June and September and encouraged them to embrace the new arrangement.
For his part, the area councillor, Mr Rizerua Kazenambo thanked health officials for their support in keeping the area clean.
He said they played a vital role as they mobilised the communities through their educational messages.
He also complained about undeveloped plots in his area noting that they were haven for criminals. ENDS
