Bonang Koo Theatre Group comes out tops

08 Jul 2013

Lobatse-based Bonang Koo Theatre Group beat three other competitors to claim first prize in the President’s Day finals.

In an exciting and too close to call final at the scenic Maitisong theatre in Maruapula, the youthful Lobatse group displayed a genteel performance that left the crowd chanting for more action just after their 30 minutes performance.

With top class interpretation of the script, cultured characterisation, technique and sublime voice projection the group, consisting of young people well aged below 30 outdid their opponents with a play titled “Monna wa next door”, a desperate attempt by a certain lady living next door to a customarily unemployed drunkard to unearth the raw talent on his son and use it to put food on the table.

Rraagwe Mozulu, as the character is called has undying passion for his son to enrol in the military but that is not where Mozulu’s talent lies.

Most of the plays though applauded President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama for his support for arts; an initiative they also believed would help reduce poverty in Botswana.

Ghetto Artists, who came third and earned P22 500 for their efforts were surely disappointed by their play “The mind Tlhaloganyo” which was somehow littered with a lot of musical.

Drum Theatre who represented Maun also did very well with their play titled “The footprints” about a hopeless young man Sizwe who was literally sitting on his talent but with the encouragement of his sister and uncle triumphed.

In yet another highlight of the evening, eight comedians slugged it out for the mouth-watering first prize.

Hukuntsi born self-acclaimed comedy king, Odirile Brooks who was looking for treble in the category was beaten hands down by a highly spirited and painstakingly funny Kabo Keitheng of Tonota.

Keitheng left the near capacity Maitisong theatre in stitches when he poked fun on Zebras coach Stanley Tshosane’s post-match interviews.

Most of the performances were very impressive save for a few below par shows from the likes of Kaelo Diphofu and Amantle Mmonadibe who were booed off the stage.

On Friday afternoon, Onkgopotse Manuel narrowly beat Ngwao Putswa in a close tie in the poetry category.

In Chorale, KTM Choir continued with their dominance when they beat Serowe Symphony and Maun Chorale to the first prize.

The choirs were given one standard song to perform and also performed their own compositions. ENDS
