Mantshwabisi Primary School head, Ms Mmasethunya Mmusi said despite receiving donations in all kinds from various Good Samaritans to help ease existing challenges, her school has so far not managed to turn such good gestures into improving its academic results.
Speaking at the donation of toiletry and stationary by the Gaborone University College of Law (GUC) public health students at the school on Friday, Ms Mmusi indicated that the school had for some time been registering results below the regional target.
She however, informed the donors not to lose hope on the school as they were hopeful that very soon they would turn the corner for the better. She said so far donations to her school had been in the form of toiletry, sports equipment and others.
She thus encouraged both students and staff to work harder to repay the donors’ trust and belief in them. She said the school has an enrolment of 547 students with 336 of them being boarders.
She also revealed that the school had a catchment area that covers Mosime and Lerulakala.
Public Health Patriot chairperson, Mr Keoletetse Sokwe indicated that as students who had benefitted from government funding and community support, they also found it fit to give back to the needy in the same society.
He said although students had long indicated that their allowance was not enough to sustain them, they had nevertheless found it fit to share the little they have with students of Mantshwabisi Primary School.
He said the donation aimed at creating a conducive learning environment to enable students from the school to achieve good results.
The donation, he added was the first step in establishing a long standing relationship with the school. Mr Sokwe said the Public Health Patriot is a club made up of 23 students doing their final year of Public Health Degree, and were hopeful that other batches would continue the relationship with the school.
Giving a word of encouragement, Mr Karabo Tshweneyame advised parents that building a healthy person overall could help improve one’s education, adding such good health starts at home by ensuring that students are well fed and clean before coming to school.
He said that would help keep students alert and help them concentrate in class, adding that the donation should be seen as an encouragement to students to work harder.
He also encouraged the school management to visit and consult parents of RADs settlements within their catchment areas to directly address the issue of students absconding from school.
