Lack of supervision irks DC

14 Nov 2017

District commissioner for Kgalagadi, Mr Rapetse Mathumo has raised a concern over lack of supervision by heads of departments in the district.

Addressing heads of departments from central government in Tsabong recently, Mr Mathumo said government was concerned that managers were failing to supervise their staff.

Thus, he said some officers come to work late and as a result fail to deliver services on time, yet expect to be paid at the end of every month.

Mr Mathumo further said it was imperative for all staff members to know their Job Effectiveness Description (JED’s) because they were pivotal in guiding them in delivering and servicing customers satisfactorily.

In addition, he said it was also vital for them to know the statutes of their work as that would help them build their supervisees and fellow workers.

“Lack of proper understanding of what work entails often results in too many grievances, which ultimately end up as disputes and in the process cost government a lot of money, which could otherwise had been avoided,” he said.

Most of the time, he said grievances emanated from simple things such as failure by supervisor to appoint someone to act when the other employee goes on leave.

Furthermore, the district commissioner warned officers to guard against corrupt practices in their respective departments, noting that corruption was rife in some departments.

On other issues, he said government was greatly concerned about the high usage of ITC, which in most cases is for the wrong reasons such as social media and discussing political matters during working hours.

He warned that very soon there would be tools in place to monitor such wayward behaviour and culprits would be brought to book.

Mr Mathumo also urged the gathering to avoid putting on regalia depicting political party emblems and to ensure that they behave appropriately during holidays adding that they should leave capable staff to ensure continuity.

For their part, the HOD’s promised to closely monitor their subordinates and to always seek advice where they feel incapacitated. BOPA
