08 Jul 2013

The Department of Arts and Culture will hold its first ever fashion show at Boipuso Hall on July 11.

The fashion show is expected to start from 7pm until 10pm where 26 contestants from around the country would participate. Contestants would also endeavour to promote the competition theme: President’s Day Arts and Culture-Excellence in Arts and Culture by 2016.

In an interview, head of visual arts division, Monica Selelo said their department intended to introduce a new category to the President’s Day Competitions each year, hence the fashion show. “We travel across the country researching and communicating with stakeholders involved, carrying with us the purpose of identifying and filling gaps in the arts and culture sector,” she said.

However, she said while they managed to inspire participants from most corners of the country, it was clear that most competitors were from Gaborone. She indicated that they also had competitors from surrounding cities and towns, notably Francistown and Lobatse as well as from villages such as and Molepolole, Gobojango in Bobonong the area, Nxamasere in Ngamiland and Siviya in the northern part of the country.

Prizes would include the P10 000 cash, a capacity building course and connections to the fashion industry in Botswana. The department would also encourage the winner to start their own clothing label and would also facilitate the first fashion show for them.

Those in second and third places wouldl walk away with P 8000 and P6 000 prizes respectively.  ENDS
