Bakwena calls for originality
07 Jul 2013
Reginald Bakwena has encouraged artists to put more effort in creating artwork in order to attract clients.
Speaking at the Thapong members exhibition in Gaborone on July 4, Bakwena said the exhibition paves way for the prime event which is the Thapong Artist of the Year Award in November.
The exhibition attracted 48 Thapong members in the country and internationally as they displayed more than 60 works of art from different categories.
The coordinator said the exhibition gives artists an opportunity to interact with one another and meet clients.
He urged government and the private sector to take art as an investment, “purchase artwork with value so that it lasts longer and remains memorable.”
He asked the artists to learn to reflect the value of art and be innovative with their work.
Bakwena said artists should develop a track record very well because clients want proof that the owner of the work can be trusted.
He stressed that the quality and price should match: “have fine art quality which will grow this country.”
Bakwena also expressed disappointment with artists who copy other people’s work and present it as their own.
He said every artist should brand themselves which will set them apart from the rest of other creators. Ends
