Elderly make significant contribution - Tshireletso

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ms Botlogile Tshireletso says the elderly make significant contributions in the society by taking care of children, the sick and people with disabilities.
Giving a keynote address at the commemoration of the International Day of the Elderly in Tsamaya on November 4, Ms Tshireletso said the elderly actively participated in the country's decision making processes during kgotla meetings.
The assistant minister indicated that this year's theme, " stepping into the future: tapping the talents, contributions and participation of older persons in society" encourages effective means of promoting and strengthening the participation of elders in various aspects of social, economic and political life.
She highlighted that there was need to tap from their experience, wisdom and indigenous knowledge which were often overlooked but very imperative for sustainable development..
Ms Tshireletso said Botswana aimed at building a cohesive and caring society where the elderly were respected and supported.
"Government has significantly changed the lives of elders for the better through the provision of essential services such as clean water."
She further noted that assistance was also given to them through programmes such as old age pension, monthly food basket with cash allowance, World War II veterans and disability allowance.
Ms Tshireletso pleaded with elders to mould the young generation to become good and responsible citizens who are guided by the understanding of respect and Botho.
"It is well known that you spend a lot of time with your grandchildren which is the right opportunity to inculcate positive values while they are still young."
Giving her remarks on challenges faced by the elderly, Ms Elizabeth Mongwa said government should consider building a retirement home for the elderly where they would spend time with their agemates.
She said such centre would allow them to exercise and also do recreational activities.Ms Mongwa said as elders they were grateful for the old age pension from government.
MP for Tati East Mr Samson Guma thanked the elderly for instilling values on their children.He highlighted that "every person is where they are because of the love and care of an elderly."
He called on people to give gratitude to the elderly adding that they should not forget them as they progress in life. ENDS
