Close to 250 people from all walks of life joined Nandos and Diabetes Association of Botswana (DAB) in a sponsored walk to increase diabetes awareness efforts across the country.
The 5km sponsored walk dubbed “Nando’s Walk for Diabetes” started at the Blue Tree to Curves Gym at Middlestar and then back along the same route ended with a breakfasts for participants.
All proceeds from the walk will go towards the Diabetes Association of Botswana, which provides diabetes education, support and care in Botswana.
Ms Simiso Ncube, Nando’s head of brand and marketing, explained that her company encouraged healthy lifestyle choices and this was the reason why its partnership with the diabetes association had grown from strength to strength for seven years.
She said Nandos, as a big brand, had embarked on corporate social responsibility and the walk for diabetes was one of those activities of giving back to back to the community.
She said the objective of the walk was to promote physical activity which she said assist in the prevention of diabetes and associated diseases such as obesity and high blood pressure.
Ms Ncube explained that the walk for Diabetes had seen a remarkable growth in registration numbers adding that the event continued to receive increased participation from Batswana and other corporate sponsors.
In addition, Nandos had supported the Youth Camp for kids living with diabetes in Gaborone as well as northern parts of the country.
Ms Ncube further said Nandos would also support Diabetes Association of Botswana by sponsoring this year’s commemoration of World Diabetes Day in Ramotswa on November 11.
Other activities organised by Nandos included annual youth camp and Christmas parties for children living with diabetes.
In order to reach as many Batswana as possible, diabetes association conducted free diabetes tests to check for potential diabetic patients.
She encouraged residents of Ramotswa to come up in large numbers and test for diabetes and other non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure.
Tests would starts at 8am and ends at 10pm.
Ms Ncube said this year, they were privileged to have more corporate sponsors coming on board that included AON Botswana and The Voice Newspaper. ENDS
