Constituency teams show growth

Best performing constituency sport tournament teams were awarded for their outstanding shows in a night filled with frenzy and aplomb by the competing teams at Serowe College of Education hall.

Only three sporting codes of football, volleyball and netball partook at finals.

Zwikombo ladies volleyball team scored big after being crowned ladies volleyball champions and the most disciplined side. On top of the P9900, trophy and gold medals the team scored another trophy for their disciplined character throughout the games.

Second to Zwikombo came Real Shooters who pocketed P7700 and silver medals whilst Hustlers bagged some bronze medals and P4000. Rising Stars only rose to the fourth where they received a participatory trophy.

In men’s volleyball, Block 8 was overall champions and smiled home with winner’s trophy and medals on top of the P9900 prize money. Airborne were second, Vegetta third whilst Young Fighters could only fight for fourth spot. Vegetta were also declared the most disciplined team.

Like Zwikombo, Hot spurs football team too were declared champions and also won the most disciplined side where they pocketed P9900, a trophy and gold medals plus another trophy for their discipline.

Moremogolo came second and garnered silver medals and P7700 for their runners-up show.

In netball, Ghetto Ferns who were in jovial mood as their home city Francistown celebrated 120 years, rose to the top and like others received P9900, a trophy and gold medals whilst Delta Queens came second. Bothakga and Wizards came third and fourth respectively whilst Ma 14 scooped the most disciplined award.

For a team to win the most disciplined award factors such as but not limited to attitudes of players towards opponents and the referee, challenging for the ball in a fair manner and fair play were put to test.

At the ceremony, Serowe Administration Authority deputy chairperson, Atamelang Thaga said that the constituency sport tournament has grown in leaps and bounds from the initial 1600 participants to the current over 80 000.

He challenged the athletes to win with humility and lose with grace every time they partook in sport competitions.
also paid homage to the volunteers who have ensured great success of the competitions over the years.

He said that not only were the competitions beneficial to those at remote areas to realise their potential but, have seen players graduate to mainstream sports whilst referees were trained hone their skills.

He, however, warned against what he termed fraud by some players who deliberately disregard the laid down procedures and regulations. This, Thaga found, had a huge potential to cripple the objectives the tournament.

The deputy SAA chaiperson also warned against doping in sports saying “they two don’t marry.”

For his part Kgosi Serogola Seretse said that if taken seriously, constituency sport tournaments could help youth to abstain from drugs. He encouraged participants to present themselves as role models to others.
Kgosi Seretse appealed to youth to hone and nurture their talents and skills to their benefit. BOPA
