31 Oct 2017

Southern District has registered a total of 4 969 people needing government assistance.

Speaking at the Sub-council meeting in Kanye on Monday, Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) Sub-council chairperson, Mr Tlhomamo Dibeela said beneficiaries included 1 768 permanent destitute persons, 125 temporary destitute persons, 1 732 needy students, 11 children, 1 168 orphans and 48 Community Home Based Care patients.

The slight increase in the number of beneficiaries, according to Councillor Dibeela was due to new registration of temporary destitute persons, needy students and children.

However, Councillor Dibeela noted the number of orphans, home based care clients and permanent destitute persons decreased as compared to previous reporting period due to graduation of orphans and deaths of CHBC clients.

Further, Mr Dibeela, also councillor for Dilolwe ward, informed councillors that the sub-district would engage on a mass assessment of beneficiaries from November 6 to 17 to review beneficiaries for possible graduation from programmes and update records.

He said the exercise would also target those on poverty eradication projects to check the sustainability of the projects.

Meanwhile, Cllr Dibeela had indicated that 293 people had been assisted with different projects under the poverty eradication programme, out of which 90 per cent are women.

Cllr Dibeela confirmed that Kgwatlheng Main Clinic upgrading, which was constructed under Economic Stimulus Programme, was still ongoing.

“The project is at design stage and is expected to finish in December,” he said.

He added that Kgwatlheng staff housing project was also ongoing.

However, Mr Dibeela stated that due to unavailability of funds other staff housing projects in different villages within KAA would be considered in the 2018/19 period.

He also stated that the upgrading of Sebego Clinic was deferred to 2018/19 due to budgetary constraints.

On maintenance of roads affected by rains, the sub-council learnt KAA was allotted a little over P600 000 to maintain them.

He mentioned the two-kilometre paving of KAA internal roads by use of interlocking bricks, construction of lined storm water drainage channel at Lotlhakane East, construction of a culvert in Molapowabojang at Marusa crossing and re-construction of a culvert in Moshaneng along kgotla road among projects to be undertaken.
