30 Oct 2017

Ngamiland residents have been urged to assist police in the fight against crime in order to attract more investors and grow tourism sector.

Acting officer commanding, senior superintendent Samuel Kgomo said Ngamiland was a tourism destination hence the need to double efforts and ensure the area became crime free and open doors for investment.

He made the plea during the celebration and awarding of certificates to individuals and community clusters which contributed significantly towards crime prevention in the district.

The recipients of certificates emerged victorious at the national crime prevention competitions held in Gaborone scooping position, one, two and three respectively and brought 18 certificates.

Senior Superintendent Kgomo explained that if communities failed to fight crime especially in Ngamiland, that would have a negative impact in the tourism industry which would ultimately affect the country’s economy.

“We have to make sure we are deployed  in all areas including tourist attractions to ensure safety  of  our visitors,” he said.

Senior Superintendent Kgomo also appealed to cluster committees to also focus on enhancing  the bond between the police and the community in order to achieve unity of purpose.

Kgosi Charles Letsholathebe commended community crime prevention clusters together with the police for their  efforts in reducing crime.

He said it was pleasing to see the police recognising the invaluable contribution of a larger community in the fight against crime and other social ills.

He said since the formation of community crime prevention clusters and engagement of special constables, crime had dropped drastically and  urged those in authority  to consider increasing their wages and hire special constables                   permanently as some had been in the service for long.

Earlier on, Kgosi Leretese Mogalakwe emphasised the need for the four local authorities to collaborate and spread the message of anti-crime with one voice. He said since their district was a tourism hub, they should  protect the natural resources and ensure the area was free from crime. BOPA
