School conditions worry ministry

25 Oct 2017

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has noted public concerns on the condition of some schools in remote area settlements as highlighted in the recent Echo article under the headline: “Education crisis in RADP schools.”

A press statement released on October 24 says contrary to reports about the ill treatment of school children at Remote Area Development Programme (RADP) hostels, the ministry does not have any recorded case of that nature.

However, the ministry will continue to monitor the programme and provide necessary psycho-social support as well as guidance and counselling services at RADP hostels.

The release says about nine students at Makgadikgadi Junior Secondary School are yet to report back to school and authorities are appealing to their families and the community to facilitate their return to school.

It says the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is aware of water shortage at Kuke settlements, and that the Ghanzi District Council has already informed Water Utilities Corporation about the problem.

In the meantime, the council has installed water boosters at Kuke Primary School in addition to other amenities provided such as toiletries, clothing and learning equipment to the children in the settlements.

It says the ministry through various local authorities is committed to improving the quality of life for all through effective and efficient delivery of basic infrastructure and social services in partnership with key stakeholders including parents, teachers, VDCs and Bogosi. ENDS
