04 Jul 2013

As a way to celebrate their country’s 49th Independence, Society of Malawians in Botswana will line up income generating activities to benefit the less privileged members of the community.

Addressing members of the media in Gaborone on July 2, president of the society, Mr Aggrey Chiumia said the society intended to promote international cooperation by deepening cross cultural interactions in Botswana among Malawians, Batswana and other nationalities in Southern Africa.

More importantly, Mr Chiumia said the society intended to promote the spirit of co–existence, love and participating in giving to the communities through the helping hand initiatives. He said the society therefore took advantage of its country’s independence celebration and extended a helping hand to the needy.

He revealed that in 2012, the society managed to raise resources to buy blankets, shirts, golf shirts, dresses, food baskets and donated to over 250 children in Monwane village through the Adopt A Person (AAP) charitable organisation. The AAP organisation took care of over 2 000 orphans and vulnerable children in several villages in the country.

“Our interaction with AAP charity reveals that there are more areas requiring attention and support to these vulnerable others in the community”, he said. He stated that they intended to host a dinner dance at the Gaborone International Convention Center on July 13 under the theme, “Celebrating together and touching lives at 49.”

Mr Chiumia explained that the society would also host a music festival on July 14 at Boipuso hall complex, which will feature one of Botswana’s upcoming artists, Rejoice ‘Jojo’ Gaonakala.

Jojo who has recently found fan across the country and beyond will share the stage with Malawi’s best reggae band called the Black Missionaries.

Mr Chiumia said the proceeds from the two activities will be channeled to AAP charity organisation. ENDS
