Masunga bids farewell to fallen hero

The late Ms Kene Tjikwakwa has been described as a hardworking and committed member of the community who served not just Masunga village, but the nation at large.
Speakers at her funeral in Masunga on Saturday lauded her for being a national hero, whose love for sport and community service was unstoppable.
Ms Tjikwakwa was the former Botswana Netball Association (BONA) Northern region coordinator and also Township Rollers Masunga supporters’ club treasurer.
She was also a VDC member and served on numerous other committees in the village.
Speaking at the funeral, MP for Tati West, also Assistant Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Mr Biggie Butale said the late Tjikwakwa was a trustworthy person who believed in accountability.
He said the deceased left a good mark and a legacy by encouraging her children to engage in sport.
Mr Butale stated that Masunga had lost a hero who served the community selflessly. “She was a star and we are thankful for her life,” he added.
He further thanked the public for coming in large numbers to bid her farewell. Another speaker, Kgosi Maruje III reiterated that Ms Tjikwakwa was indeed bubbly and a hard worker.
He said the deceased was sharp with the truth, which was her strongest point.
Kgosi Maruje III indicated that the late Tjikwakwa was an asset to the village as they depended on her accounting skills and confidence at VDC for the benefit of the village.
“Batswana, let’s learn the value of hard work, we are sending away a woman who performed her community duties selflessly and we should continue that legacy,” Kgosi said. A message from Botswana Prisons and Rehabilitation Commissioner, Mr Silas Motlalekgosi read that the deceased was a hard worker who contributed to the growth of netball not just at prisons, but nationally.
It further stated that due to her hardworking nature, the deceased climbed through the ranks having been the overseer at Mochudi Prisons upon her retirement.
The message highlighted that the retired senior superintendent left behind a long lasting legacy of hard work and community service.
The deceased’s uncle, Mr Christopher Masunga described her as a hard worker and a loving person who served the community diligently. He said the late Ms Tjikwakwa was an active person, who enjoyed helping others as she served on a number of committees in the village despite being asthmatic.
He stated that the deceased respected him, adding that he did not expect her to succumb to asthma soon. ENDS
