Letlhakane an area surrounded by five mines will finally get streetlights, thanks to Constituency Development Fund.
This emerged at a kgotla meeting held at Buuhe ward addressed by the Member of Parliament for Boteti East Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe on September 27.
Mr Lelatisitswe stated that Constituency Development Fund would be used to install solar streetlights through Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI).
The MP noted that the project was considered after thorough research on priority projects and streetlight installation came as the most crucial project for Boteti.
He acknowledged that Letlhakane being a mining area had a high movement of mining employees travelling to and from their respective places of work on night duty, hence the need to install streetlights.
Mr Lelatisitswe noted that installation of streetlights would help curb crime rate in Letlhakane, citing series of rape cases.
The legislator stated that the installation would play a significant role in ensuring safety of school going children who were compelled to travel during early hours to school citing children residing in Buuhe, a ward located in the outskirts of Letlhakane.
On other issues, the MP informed the residents of Buuhe that theirs was not a village but a ward therefore such facilities like schools, clinics and police could not be provided.
However he said they would try to establish if a police post could not be established.
He added that stand pipes would be connected for needy people through tokens adding that after installation of Buuhe borehole, issues of water shortage would be addressed.
He stated that installation of a solar powerlight in Buuhe could help curb crime. Mr Lelatisitswe advised the residents to establish operational guidelines for the borehole.
He further encouraged them to cooperate with landboard authorities with regard to aligning corner poles of their plots.
When commenting, the residents requested land for farming, adding that lack of streetlights exacerbated crime rate and posed danger to school children .
Criminals, they said, terrorized them but failed to get assistance from the police due to lack of transport. ENDS
