26 Sep 2017

Non repayment of loans by Self Help Housing Agency beneficiaries has resulted in arrears amounting to more than P1.4 million as at June.

Speaking during the Kgatleng District Council meeting on September 25 in Mochudi, council chairperson, Mr Mpho Morolong said 69 home improvement projects were funded for the financial year 2014/15 at P2.9 million.

He said 66 projects were completed while the other three were delayed.

He noted that P3.8 million was approved for the financial year 2015/16 which covered 62 applications.

Mr Morolong further said 10 more projects were funded which brought the total number to 72.

He said of the 72 projects, 62 were completed while 10 were at various stages of construction.

The chairperson said 15 applications were funded for the financial year 2016/17 at P900 000, and that 10 projects were completed while five were at various construction stages.

He urged councillors to encourage their electorates to pay in order to ensure that others benefitted from the programme.

In another matter, the council chairperson told councillors that water supply in the district was stable with enough pressure to supply both low and high lying areas.

Mr Morolong, however, said the villages of Mabalane, Dikwididi, Ramotlabaki and Bokaa  were still experiencing a deficit, especially in high lying areas.

He noted that water bowsing was ongoing to augment supply in affected villages.

“Let me inform you that funds have been secured to address the water situation in Ramotlabaki and Bokaa, and the tendering process for both villages’ water schemes are expected to commence this month,” he said.

The council chairperson further said the Mabalane Treatment Plant had been decommissioned, and that a consultant was appointed to carry out an assessment of the surface water treatment plant.

He said the assessment was to determine the actions required to enable the plant to operate at full capacity and produce water that complied with water quality standards.

He noted that a report had been produced and that it recommended an upgrading project to increase the capacity of the plant, adding that more funds would be required to achieve the objective.

He said he had been informed that water quality was continuously monitored in all the villages in the district, and that a manual disinfection was being carried out at villages that do not have permanent treatment facilities. ENDS
