03 Jul 2013

Young golf players, Leroy Pearman (17) of Phikwe club and David Masole (22) of Gaborone outclassed their senior competitors at the two-day Botswana Ash Makgadikgadi Golf Open hosted by Sowa Golf club.

In an interview after the weekend tournament, Leroy who was crowned the overall winner with overall gross of 146 scores and a gross net of 142, said it was 100 per cent performance record for him this year because it was his third consecutive win.

Among Botswana Golf Union (BGU) sanctioned competitions he took part on was the Jwaneng and Central tourneys which he won by nine and six shots respectively and the Makgadikgadi Open which he has won by nine shots as well.

He noted that although he was at his peak performance, he would be slowing down to give himself time and space to study for his final examination in November this year. Meanwhile, his runner up at the tourney, David came second with 155 overall gross scores and 145 gross net to be crowed the best runner up to his fellow young competitor Leroy.

Sabelo Matikiti explained that the tournament attracted over 60 golfers and within this there was only a handful of young players and as such BGU set themselves an objective to attract young players to play golf.

To achieve their mandate, Matikiti said they had tasked clubs around the country to have developments sides targeting young players from an early age to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Leroy who started playing golf at the age of eight.

The tournament was sponsored at the tune of P80 000 with 50 per cent coming from the one of the main sponsors Botash and the other half of the money came from individual clubs contributions.

Quipco Botswana sponsored with caps and t-shirts for the players. ENDS
