SPTC to empower local businesses

31 Aug 2017

Selebi Phikwe Town Council (SPTC) will continue to engage businesses stationed in the town in order to boost the local economy, says the mayor of Selebi Phikwe, Mr Molosiwa Molosiwa

Addressing the SPTC full council meeting recently, Mr Molosiwa noted that the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, through the Primary School Feeding

Programme, has taken a decision for schools to procure agricultural products such as fruits, vegetables and eggs from local companies.

He encouraged local businesses engaged in fruits, vegetable and poultry projects or businesses to register with schools in their localities to supply their products.

Briefing councillors, the mayor noted that implementation of the Ipelegeng Programme for the 2017/2018 financial year was ongoing with focus on the maintenance of public facilities, grass cutting and litter picking, fencing of public facilities, sweeping of roads as well as desilting of culverts.

He said the programme quota has been increased from 1 374 to 1 466 hence an increase of 92 beneficiaries.

The mayor further highlighted that government continued to strive to provide decent accommodation for the less fortunate in society.

Mr Molosiwa explained that the town council was allocated three one-bedroomed houses and five two-bedroomed houses as well as two stand-alone ablution blocks at P810 000.

He said Botswana Cooperative Association (BOCA) and Image Civil Engineering Company has also taken heed of the call by the Presidential Housing Appeal to house those in need by donating two houses to families in Botshabelo and Sesame Kagiso wards respectively.

He said the one in Botshabelo has already been handed over to the owner in June this year while the house at Sesame-Kagiso ward was still under construction.

Mayor Molosiwa said he was impressed by the improved working relations and interaction that continued to manifest between the Selebi Phikwe Town Council and SPEDU.

He explained that recently the two organisations signed an MoU to solidify and regularise the organisations’ service level partnership in ensuring a sustainable economy of the town. ENDS
