29 Aug 2017

The Metsimotlhabe community on August 25 converged at Metsimotlhabe Primary School to introspect on issues that have clouded the performance of the school.

Lack of unity among the school management, teachers and the community was pointed out as a major challenge that needed to be addressed.

Speaking at the meeting themed 'Passion, dedication and good health: A foundation for better academic performance,' Member of Parliament for Gabane-Mmankgodi, Major General Pius Mokgware said the school had been struggling to bring parents on board due to misunderstandings among the school management, teachers and the community.

“I will describe this gathering as more like team building. This is one of the initiatives that we community leaders came up with to bring peace and unity to the school,” he said.

He said through the new school head, relations between the school management and the parents’ teachers association has also improved.

Maj. Gen. Mokgware noted that the school had not been performing well due to other reasons ranging from lack of appropriate facilities, lack of stationary and child negligence.

Mr Raphael Mmipi of Metsimotlhabe reiterated that it was good to introspect and map the way forward.

He urged parents to pay attention to the wellness of their children and to report any health issues to the school.

“Guard against absenteeism. Take education seriously and help children build their future," he said.

He encouraged pupils to take their education seriously and to use their spare time wisely as well as to abstain from drugs and criminal activities.

The school head, Mr Malaki Mello urged the community to unite for the sake of their children.

He said parents did not attend the event and that it reflected their attitude towards education.

He also said pupils did not do their homework due to lack of support from parents.

The headmaster pointed out that the school performance has dropped from 69 per cent in 2015 to 64 per cent last year.

Motivational speaker, Mr Kabelo Brown said he was disappointed that parents did not attend the event.

"Teachers cannot do it alone. It takes a community so let us be encouraged. Let us have goals of changing our lives and ultimately the output of Metsimotlhabe Primary School," he appealed.

Mr Brown urged pupils to eat well and exercise, pointing out that people were dying due to unhealthy eating habits which they passed down generations.

"Avoid fast foods, oily foods, sugary foods and drinks. Eat vegetables, fruits, lentils. Reduce salt intake and drink plenty of water. Sleep well," he said.

Ms Josephine Thugwete, a representative from the Metsimotlhabe child protection committee, said parents failed village committees that they had appointment due to lack of support.

She said parents were not forthcoming with information regarding child abuse and negligence.

She also urged parents to change for the sake of their children. ENDS
