Kweneng District Council (KDC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tshole Trust for the construction and installation of two 10 000 litre tanks that will store used oil at Gamodubu regional landfill.
Kweneng District Council deputy chairperson, Ms Tshepo Wareus said the collaboration was meant to promote the proper management of used oil for subsequent reuse and the protection of the environment and public health.
“The facility will be available for use by the public to dispose used oil in a proper and acceptable manner, a move which will help mitigate the impact of waste disposal on the environment,” she said.
Ms Wareus said plans were underway by Tshole Trust to hold road shows aimed at sensitising the public about the development.
She also briefed councillors about the formation of a taskforce comprising officers from the Department of Regional and Town Planning (DTRP), Kweneng District Council and the land board to expedite the facilitation of the Molepolole Development Plan.
The task force, she said, was to address shortcomings identified by DTRP prior to the submission of the plan to the responsible ministry. “The re-convening of the task team necessitated the need for the team to address new comments mainly centered on re-organising the plan, conducting research on economic activities aimed to revive the economy of Molepolole and the implementation of strategic goals among others,” she explained.
The deputy council chairperson said they were working on modalities aimed at expediting the facilitation of the reservation of the sustainable site for such development.
She highlighted that the decision had been made by the Department of Physical Planning to remove illegal activities within the district. She said one of them was operating commercial motor dealerships in residential plots without permission.
She said several attempts were made to relocate 41 traders, but that they ignored instructions to move.
Ms Wareus stated that the appalling situation had led to the strengthening of the policy and regulatory framework to guide responsible officers on ways to fight social ills among the community. On other issues, she said despite efforts to improve the water situation in the district, Water Utilities Cooperation was constantly reporting vandalism of pipelines to water livestock by farmers along the Thamaga-
Molepolole, Molepolole-Serinane, Kopong-Lentsweletau-Medie-Kweneng piplelines.
“These are frequently vandalised and it comes with a huge cost of maintenance and potential risk of contamination,” said Ms Wareus.
Councillors were also briefed about the improved water situation in areas of Molepolole, Thamaga and Macheng.
She expressed happiness that the funding of the Malwelwe phase two water augmentation project by the World Bank would benefit the Molepolole management centre.
The project, she said, would include the connection of additional boreholes, including upgrading of pump station at Malwelwe and the construction of an additional pipeline delivering water to the Gaotlhobogwe treatment plant.
She said in an endeavour to improve the learning environment in primary schools, a decision was taken by the government to revise the primary school menu similar to the ones provided in senior schools during the 2018/2019 financial year.Ends
