28 Aug 2017

Bangladesh community residing in Botswana on Saturday wore black badges in commemoration of Bangladesh National Mourning day.

The National Mourning Day, which is commemorated on August 15 annually, was observed with somberness, on Saturday to mark the 42nd anniversary of the assassination of Bangladesh Father of the

Nation, Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Speaking at the occasion, the consul of the republic of Bangladesh in Botswana, Dr Mozaffar Hossain said Rahman was from the time of the pseudo independence of East Pakistan in 1947, in the forefront of all struggles until the freedom of the now nation of Bangladesh in 1971.

He said fostering the principles and philosophies of their leader the people and the government strive to achieve self-sufficiency in many sectors of life.

“These principles and philosophies have formed a strong foundation for Bangladesh to become a thriving economy in the world, ” he said.

Kweneng District Council chairperson, Mr Jeffrey Sibisibi said Botswana equally ushered Bangabondhu’s philosophy as his moral is vividly enshrined in Botswana’s system of governance.

“We share his values and virtues with the people and the government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in all international forums,” he said.

He equated Bangabondhu’s greatest leadership style to those of Botswana’s former presidents, Sir Seretse Khama and Sir Ketumile Masire.

According to Dr Mufizur Rahman, Bangabondhu was the forerunner and builder of independent Bangladesh whose political discretion and powerful leadership motivated his countrymen to join in the war of liberation.

He proclaimed independence in March 26, 1971, which was followed by bloody battle in order to achieve the long desired freedom of their nation.

Bangabondhu and his family members were  murdered by anti-liberation forces in August 15, 1975. The country today observes National Mourning Day annually to pay tribute to their country’s founding father. Ends
