Modern teaching materials essential

There is need to provide education with all the technological benefits in order to prepare for the modern world.
The advice was given by the general manager of Food Botswana, Mr Oaitse Goitsemang who commended Motalaote Lekhutile Primary School teachers and students for their outstanding 2016 Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results during the school’s 2016 PSLE victory celebration in Serowe on August 24.
“If we are to lift teachers and students aspirations, we must lift the horizons with the type of surroundings and equipment provided for learning,” he said.
Mr Goitsemang called for the use of modern teaching materials in schools.
He commended students who had done exceptionally well in their 2016 PLSE.
“Through hard-work and determination, many of you exceeded their own expectation and that must give you great satisfaction.
You are now rewarded for your studies,” he said.
He said the students were privileged to receive education in a school that valued pupils equally, recognising their different gifts and abilities and developing them to full potential.
“Your PSLE exam results have been truly outstanding with 93.3 per cent achieving position two out of 31 Serowe Sub-region primary schools.
This percentage is well above average for schools of this type and this has not gone unnoticed,” he said.
He commended teachers for providing the students with a happy environment at an important time of their growing up.
“You have had the benefit of dedicated teachers who have done all in their power to enable each one of you to reach their full potential as individuals,” he said.
Mr Goitsemang implored students to choose good friends, make quality decisions and take advantage of opportunities presented to them now and in future.
“Make use of your talents and personal qualities, be ambitious and know that success depends on you,” he said.
The school principal, Ms Mariam Mpelega stated that for the year 2015/16 the school attained position one out of 15 schools in Serowe North.
She said in 2015, the school attained 45 per cent of A and B and 84.8 per cent of A,B,C PLSE results and in 2016 attained 53.3 per cent of A, B and 93,3 per cent of A,B,C PSLE results.
Further, she said in 2016 the school performed exceptionally well earning position two out of 31 schools in Serowe Sub-region.
“We obtained position 13 out of 26 schools in the central district while nationally we are at position 41 out of 755 schools,” she said, adding that dedication made it possible.
She said the doors were always open to visit and inquire about students’ performance.
“We have implemented an open door policy and circles of support programme for parents and we are working hand in hand with them,” she said.
She noted that there was regular contact between the Parents Teachers Association and the school to consult and discuss students performance.
Ms Mpelega said the school was fortunate because students were aware that learning did not end in the classroom.
“Our students are able to revise in small groups after school in their own spare time,” she said.
She said the school targeted a 50 per cent for A,B and 90 per cent for A,B,C.
Ms Mpelega said though the school had resource shortage, they were able to do more with less.
“We are able to work with what we are offered but we are in desperate need of a photocopying machine and computers,” she said.
Ms Mpelega also said the school had a reception class which was without resources but committed as it helped prepare pupils for standard one.
“We are pleading with any company to adopt and assist us so that we can prosper,” she noted.ENDS
