Ministry plans to open primary school in Bikwe

16 Aug 2017

Moshupa Sub-district council has been informed that the Department of Basic Education is planning to open a school at Bikwe.

The sub-district chairperson, Mr Sonny Phiri said the school, which is expected to be opened in January 2018, was intended to improve access and equity in education at the settlement, which has been incorporated into Manyana.

“A church at Bikwe has offered its building to be used to cater for learners. Procurement processes are underway to purchase materials for partitioning the church hall and construction of a temporary kitchen structure for the project,” he said.

Furthermore, Mr Phiri told fellow councillors that the school would go a long way in reducing the long distance endured by children to school at Manyana.

Mr Phiri, who is the councillor for Magotlhwane, said the council would provide vegetables and fruits to supplement the menu at primary schools, adding that fruits and vegetables would be procured using the Letlhafula funds.

Councillor Phiri expressed happiness that a number of schools would undergo maintenance. He noted that over P1 million had been disbursed to schools in the sub-district for maintenance works. He said the same maintenance was earmarked for primary schools under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP).

“The department is still grappling with shortage of toilets in primary schools where the situation is further exacerbated by shortage of water,” he said.

Mr Phiri also informed councillors that schools throughout the sub-district had embarked on study camps whereby completing classes remained during school holidays to cover the syllabus.

He said the aim was to improve academic results and realise the elusive regional and national targets.

The exercise, said councillor Phiri, had proven to be a viable undertaking with a lot of schools having shown academic improvement. BOPA
