15 Aug 2017
Selebi Phikwe Town Council (SPTC) and SPEDU have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together to bring developments to Selebi Phikwe as well as revitalise and diversify the economy of the town and region.
The signing ceremony took place at Cresta Bosele Hotel on Monday where the SPEDU CEO, Dr Mokubung Mokubung and Selebi Phikwe Town clerk, Mr Godimo Garegope penned down their signatures to mark the beginning of the joint venture.
Giving remarks at the event, Mr Garegope said the signing ceremony marked an important day in the history of Selebi Phikwe where SPEDU and SPTC join forces to resuscitate the ailing economy of the town and region.
He noted that the MoU was a five year joint venture initiative.
He said through development projects that would take place in Selebi Phikwe, jobs would be created for locals, and that the move would impact positively on the socio-economic aspect of the region.
He urged SPEDU to market the Selebi Phikwe Town Council development agenda and projects earmarked for the area so that potential investors could see that Selebi Phikwe was a destination of choice for investments.
He said potential investors from Selebi Phikwe, the country and internationally were welcome to present expressions of interest to pursue projects in the town. He explained that the SPTC and SPEDU would assess submissions and give a way forward to viable projects.
He noted that SPTC has land to be allocated to viable projects.
He also noted that the SPTC has facilities such as the Makhubu, Lekadibe, sports stadium and show grounds as well as a golf course among others that could be developed further.
He went on to explain that the partnership between the SPTC and SPEDU was endorsed by councillors after the SPTC management presented a proposal on the partnership and ventures to be undertaken.
For his part, Dr Mokubung expressed gratitude to the SPTC for engaging them and inviting them to come on board and play a role in the Selebi Phikwe Town Council development plan.
He said the partnership was important in that the two organisations mandates complimented each other’s development objectives.
Dr Mokubung said the signing agreement served as an agreement that was not going to stay in shelves but acted upon.
He noted that the agreement had an action sheet that the two organisations would follow, monitor and evaluate when the joint agreement elapsed.
He said the two organisations were tasked with getting the economy of Selebi Phikwe and the region on its feet, adding that they needed investors to realise the objective.
He said available land in the town must be utilised, including underutilised property which could be vandalised if not used accordingly.
He said SPEDU and SPTC were working on collaboration projects such as the development of a golf course in the town and other sport facilities such as Makhubu, Lekadiba and the sport stadium.
He said investors had shown interest in setting up an aircraft manufacturing or assembly plant in the mining town among other projects earmarked for Selebi Phikwe.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior government and SPEDU officials, the mayor of Selebi Phikwe, Mr Molosiwa Molosiwa and his deputy, Ms Dorcus Letlhogela and some councillors. BOPA
