Serowe District Health Management Team (SDHMT) wellness committee recently donated sanitary pads to 625 Mothamo Junior Secondary School students.
The donation valued at P13 320 was hailed by Serowe South Central councillor, Mr Atamelang Thaga who stated that if used wisely, the pads would assist in providing the girl child with a chance to compete and lead a fulfilled school life.
Mr Thaga made the comments during SDHMT football tournament, where the committee donated the sanitary towels to Mothamo JSS.
“With this donation, our students will become more confident, have high self-esteem thereby increasing school attendance rates and improve their education and improve their economic opportunities,” he said.
He urged students to utilise them wisely and not sell them thinking they were plenty.
“You should not in any way think that they are abundant as you may end up selling them. You are still going to need them in future and please use them wisely as expected by those who have given them to you,” he said.
Sekgoma Hospital manager, Ms Sehako Motshodi-Motsumi, thanked the committee for assisting those in need.
“You have not only made the girls feel secure and comfortable during that time of the month, you have also given them the dignity they so much deserve,” she said.
She explained that the gesture was in line with the 2036 pillar of human and social development, which stressed that by 2036, Batswana would be a moral, tolerant and inclusive society with opportunities for all.
“It further states that all members of society should contribute to social upliftment and development of the family, community and nation at large which is exactly what you have done,” she said.
She said her wish was to see other sport genres emulating them, and implored them to continue with the spirit of giving.
Mothamo school head, Mr Willie Okatswa expressed delight at the assistance saying it would go a long way in addressing students’ menstrual concerns.
He said his school, which is located in Moiyabana had an enrollemet of 1 022 students and serviced nine villages, which were remote and disadvantaged as most of its population was underprivileged.
“I would like to commend you for your efforts which are in line with government’s initiative to establish a sanitary pad provision programme in schools,” he said. ENDS
