Makwala vs van Niekerk in the 200m finals
10 Aug 2017
Botswana’s Isaac Makwala and Wayde Van Niekerk of South Africa will light up the IAAF World Championships 200m finals with dazzling showdown as they take the track at the London Stadium tonight at 2250 hours.
Makwala had on Monday missed the 200m heats as he was barred from competing after ‘allegedly’ showing symptoms of norovirus.
On Wednesday, he was allowed to run a solo time trial of 20.53 seconds or less to qualify for the semi-finals, which he finished in 20.20 seconds.
On the other hand, Van Niekerk qualified for the finals as the fastest looser by finishing at 20.28sec.
While Van Niekerk looks to add the 200m title to his 400m gold, Makwala will also be looking into proving his fitness and clinching the title too.
Makwala remains Botswana's only hope for an individual medal. ENDS
