Government protects children living with disability
08 Aug 2017
Parliament has been informed that children living with disability are catered for in the National Policy on Care for People with Disabilities of 1996.
Answering a question in Parliament recently, Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Thato Kwerepe said the policy was tabled before Parliament in the August 2016 sitting and awaits review.
He said the review sought to promote social inclusion and foster the independence of people living with disability to ensure that they were empowered to lead productive and independent lives.
Mr Kwerepe said government continued to facilitate inclusion of people with disability at all levels of education by enhancing early identification, diagnostic assessment, stimulation programme and all appropriate intervention strategies.
He further said government also facilitated the environment for improved access to facilities designed for children with severe and profound disabilities.
In addition, Mr Kwerepe said government had approved the establishment of an institution for children with profound disabilities in Maun during the NDP 11.
He also said currently there were special education classes in some public schools to cater for children with disability.
Specially Elected MP, Ms Bogolo Kenewendo had wanted the minister to state government policy on children living with disability and whether there were plans to increase schools for children living with disability. ENDS
